Abstract
557,144. Latches. EREBUS MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., JAMES, J. E., and GLOTHAM, A. May 29, 1942, No. 7273. [Class 44] A latch follower is in three parts one of which is directly operated by the spindle and rotates the others with lost motion, these parts serving to retract the bolt. As shown, the follower comprises a main part C with square axial hole to receive the usual latch spindle, and two members D, D' slidably mounted on the curved surface of part C by collars E with flanges e overlying lateral ribs d' on parts D, D<1>, which are also provided with teeth d, d' engaging racks on runner plates G, G' which serve to retract the bolt B. Part C has a radial arm F adapted to abut against an end of one or other of the parts D, D<1> so that one or other of them may be rotated-with the part C. The arrangement is such that when part C is rotated clockwise part D is operated to move plate G and withdraw the bolt whilst part D' and plate G<1> remain stationary. Opposite rotation operates parts D', G<1> leaving parts D, G stationary. In a modification the teeth are replaced by an arm on each part engaging projections on the bolt tail, one of the arms remaining idle whilst the other is retracting the bolt.
