Abstract

556,201. Mineral wool. STILL, W: G. June 26, 1942, No. 8838. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXIII] In forming mineral wool by passing a stream of molten argillaceous limestone, dolomite, blast furnace slag &c. across a jet of steam or air under pressure, the fibres are coated with a sizing agent such as starch, dextrin, sodium silicate, bitumen, resin, gum, rubber latex &c. by injecting the sizing agent through a nozzle adjacent to the steam or air supply. The humidity of the product may be controlled by varying the amount of-steam used for the injection. The rock or stone melted in a furnace a issues as a narrow stream from an outlet b over a steam jet c and is blown into a chamber d. The fibres collect on a conveyer belt e which delivers them in the form of a blanket between pairs of rollers j, h which apply increasing pressure and on to a conveyer belt k in a drying chamber m in which hot air is blown through the blanket. The blanket is slit into widths by rotary cutters wand cut up by transversely-arranged rotary cutters. The nozzle y, Fig. 4, through which sizing agent supplied by a pipe z is injected may be placed between two steam jets c. A hygroscopic sizing agent such as starch may be mixed with a water-repellent agent such as paraffin wax, heavy oil, or grease.
