Abstract

555,255. Soldering aluminium. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON, and BOLLER, W. Sept. 18, 1942, No. 13207. [Class 83 (iv)] Parts of aluminium are soldered together by first soldering to each part a coating of a metal or alloy different from the solder and subsequently soldering the two coatings together. Copper coatings may first be soldered to the aluminium parts by tin solder and the coatings then united by tin soldering. The copper coatings may be tinned during the first operation and the parts stored in this form. Parts such as aluminium coil ends may thus be provided with soldered metal coatings before assembly in an electrical machine and the ends soldered together after mounting in the machine. The soldered coatings may be in the form of perforated or other foils or in the form of wires or bands wrapped round the parts. In another form the aluminium parts after removing the superficial layer of oxide may be coated with a solder and the coating applied in powder form while the solder is still liquid. Tin or cadmium solders may be used. The coatings before application to the aluminium parts may be coated With solder in a fused bath.
