554,274. Non-metallic pipes &c. ; plastic compositions. DENTON, F. G. Dec. 26, 1941, No. 16690. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group V] Pipes or tubes are composed of alternate layers of fibre containing sheet material and a plastic composition containing Portland cement and rubber latex. The plastic composition may comprise fibrous and stone aggregates, cement, and rubber latex bound together by an aqueous solution of glue, or casein, or both, sodium fluoride, caustic soda, and lime, as described in Specification 480,881, [Group V], the rubber latex may be supplemented by bitumen. Alternatively, the plastic composition may comprise cement, rubber in fibre or comminuted form, rubber latex, and an aqueous solution of an albuminous binder ; or a waterproof aggregate may replace the rubber in fibre or comminuted form, and wood fibre may be added. The fibre-containing sheet material may be a plastic rubber composition with fibre incorporated, or felt, fibre, or fabric saturated with bitumen and compressed into sheet form. A tube may be made by applying first a layer of fibre-containing material to a mandrel, then the plastic composition in the form of a thick slurry, which is allowed to set, and narrow strips of the sheet material wrapped in succession at opposite angles. A second layer of plastic composition is then applied, followed by a strip of material applied lengthwise, and an outer layer of plastic composition. The tube may be lined with asbestos, and coated with a hard-drying paint externally. The pipes &c. may be straight or curved, and abutting lengths may be joined by rubber sleeves and band clips.
