Abstract

553,979. Cable grips. SODEN, S. W. March 11, 1940, No. 4568. [Class 78 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] In a method of raising sunken ships (see Group XXI) floats are attached to the lifting cables by sliding grips which may comprise a cylindrical part 37, Fig. 6, encircling the cable and carrying a pair of pivoted jaws 42, 43 which grip the cable when upward pressure is applied to a lifting eye 48. A grip for attaching a chain 9 to a cable 1 passing under the ship comprises a cylindrical part 49, Fig. 9, formed of two hinged halves each carrying a pivoted jaw 56 pressed into light frictional engagement with the cable by a spring plunger 61 and shaped so as to grip the cable when the grip tends to move along the cable in one direction.
