[Class 96] A paper-making machine felt 5, Figs. 1 and 4, is cleaned by supporting it over an arc of a rotating perforated roll 1 within which is a suction box 16, traversed from one side of the felt to the other, cleaning fluid being supplied to the felt from a nozzle 78 in advance of and traversed in synchronism with the suction box. The nozzle and suction box may be automatically made inoperative during one direction of traverse which may be at greater speed than that of the operative traverse. The nozzle 78 and suction box 16 may be adjusted towards the felt and roll by screw and slot means 80 and 23 &c. and may be mounted on carriages 70 and 12 which are traversed by screws 73 and 30 and guided by stationary supports 72 and 8. The screws 30 and 73 are driven in synchronism with the paper-making machine as from a shaft 32 through gears 43 &c. as illustrated in Fig. 1, and dog clutches 34, 50 are engaged and disengaged alternately at each end of the traverse movement. The valve mechanism for the suction and cleaning fluid may be as described in Specification 478,713. In modifications, the suction box and fluid nozzle are supported on the same sliding carriage within the roll 1; the cleaning fluid is supplied through the periphery of a rotating foraminous ring within and touching the cylinder 1 ; the suction box 16 has two parts, the second of greater suction than the first, cleaning fluid being supplied to the outer face of the felt 5 adjacent the part of less suction.
