A drum napping machine of the kind in which the napping surface is constituted by a plurality of driven napping rolls 10 of which the bearings at both ends of each roll are supported by the arms of a drum spider 18 disposed one at each end of the rolls 10, is characterized in that an air passage 19, 19a curved approximately at a right angle is provided inside each spider arm, each passage comprising a portion 19 which extends approximately axially of the drum from its inlet disposed adjacent the journal 20 of the drum as far as the curve 119 of the passage and a portion 19a which extends substantially radially of the drum as far as its outlet provided in the region of the napping roll bearings. Cooling air streams are produced through the passages 19, 19a during rotation of the drum and additional cooling air may be generated by a fan (not shown). Each end 11 of each roll 10 is received by ball or roller bearings 12 mounted with elastic rings 13 in a bearing ring 14 mounted to slide axially in a housing 15. Vee-belts (not shown) drive the rolls 10 through pulleys 16. The spider 18 is slid on to the drum tube 17 and screwed thereto.
