Abstract

553,749. Alkylating hydrocarbons. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. Dec. 1, 1941, No. 15466. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1940. '[Class 2 (iii)] In alkylating hydrocarbons in presence of an inorganic sulphur acid catalyst (H 2 SO 4 , ClHSO 3 or FHSO 3 ) by means of an alkylation catalyst, e.g. isoparaffins by olefines, at least one of the reactants is treated with a substantially hydrocarbon-insoluble strong carboxylic acid (i.e. one having a dissociation constant of at least 1.8 x 10-<SP>5</SP> and preferably of at least 2.0 x 10-<SP>5</SP>) prior to contact with the catalyst so as to prolong the effective life of the catalyst. In examples a cracked gasoline to be used for alkylation of isobutane is heated at 50‹C. with 90 per cent. formic acid, and a pentaneamylene fraction of cracked hydrocarbons is treated with 90 per cent. formic acid at 70‹C. Other acids which may be used are oxalic, malonic, chloracetic, hydroxyacetic, lactic, tartaric, and, less advantageously, acetic acid.
