Abstract
553,682. Renovating foundry sand. BARNEBL, A. J., GREGG, A. W., and WEBSTER, R. Dec. 1, 1941, No. 15482. [Class 83 (i)] Foundry sand is recovered for re-use by treating in a classifier or elutriator 10 to remove the more buoyant particles and passing the remainder through a device 22 for removing water from and drying it. Castings may be transferred from foundry 1 to location 2 for removing adhering sand &c. and cores by high pressure water and sand, e.g. by device 3, as described in Specification 498,478, [Group XXIII], the bulky material being separated out by a sieve 7. The cleaned sand and water pass to a storage hopper 17 from which part is pumped to a reservoir 4 for supplying the device 3 and the remainder is fed on to a rotating drum 23, from the inside of which air and water are drawn up by a fan 27 and to the outside of which hot air from a furnace 33 is applied. The dry sand is returned by a conveyer 36 to the foundry 1. Water from the sludge settler 14 and from the drum 23 is collected in a tank 16 and used in the classifier 10 and, if necessary, to feed the cleaned sand in the hopper 21 to the dryer 22. Any excess from the tank 16 runs to waste and any lack is made up from the main 40.
