Abstract

553,609. Wood composition board. PATERSON. A., LUBICZ, N., and MANIFOLD DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd. Nov. 26, 1941, No. 15227. [Class 145 (ii)] A wood composition board is produced from untreated wood waste containing shavings, sawdust and chips by grading, mixing and coating the fragments with synthetic phenol- or amino-plastic and moulding under conditions of temperature and pressure. The plastic may be formed by condensing urea, phenol or compounds related to phenol with aldehydes such as formaldehyde. A machine of the worm conveyer type may be used for conveying the wood since this enables a continuous stream of fragments to be disturbed, showered or thrown about while being sprayed. The wood fragments may also be showered down a tower wherein a countercurrent of fine spray is maintained. In moulding, pressures of 1 to 1¢ tons per sq. inch, temperatures from 200‹ to 250‹ F. and times from 10 to 15 minutes may be employed. Doors, partitions, floors, panelling, packing cases, and furniture may be produced from the material. Pigments may be incorporated during manufacture, and the material used for camouflaged boards for huts &c.
