Abstract

553,582. Water-paints. RANDALL, W. J., and KETHRO, S. C. A. Dec. 29, 1941, No. 16732. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] A powder, to be mixed with water to produce a water paint or distemper, comprises a pigment, a wetting and emulsifying agent, and a binding agent consisting of a synthetic resin, casein and a water-soluble alkyl-cellulose, the alkyl-cellulose amounting to 5 per cent. by weight or less of the total amount of binding and emulsifying agents. Specified pigments are titanium white, calcium carbonate and green chromium oxide, and specified wetting and emulsifying agents are glyceryl monostearate and triethanolamine. A specified alkylcellulose is methyl-cellulose, and specified synthetic resins are glycerine-phthalic anhydride resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins and a resin derived from a cyclic ketone. Other specified optional additions are stearic acid, linseed and soya oils which may be refined, boiled, blown or polymerized, and hydrocarbon oils, and a longoil alkyd resin varnish.
