Abstract
553,364. Thermal switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Sept. 4, 1942, No. 12499. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1941. [Class 38 (v)] A switch for starting electric discharge devices comprises a thermal strip 12, to which is secured a spring contact arm 13. both embracing and pivotally moving on a stem 11. The outer end of the strip 12 is free to move between stops 25, 26. The pivotal movement of the arms 12, 13 is frictionally restrained by the upward pressure of a leaf spring 19. A heater 22 of small thermal mass lies on one side of the strip 12, and optionally a second heater 33 of large thermal mass may lie on the other. For quick starting the heater 22 is operative, and the strip 12 first moves from stop 25 to stop 26 and then, as it bows moves the contact arm 13, the friction at the pivot 11, tending to give a retarded snap action. To prevent quick successive breaks, if the discharge lamp fails to light, the second heater 33 warms up slowly and keeps the strips in bowed position, and the circuit open for a relatively long time.
