Abstract

553,009. Conveyers. WILSON, G. D., and BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. Jan. 12, 1942, No. 441. [Class 78 (i)] Means for preventing a canvas or like stretchable conveyer belt 1 from lateral movement comprise frictional or braking means 8, 14 located adjacent the belt-driving pulley, which, when the belt tends to wander to either side, automatically engage the corresponding edge of the belt and retard it, so that the driving pulley stretches or distorts the edge of the belt and exerts a pull thereon one component of this pull being transverse to the belt and opposite to the direction of displacement. The nearer the braking device is to the driving pulley the greater is the transverse component of the pull. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the lower or return run of the belt passes over a round bar 6 mounted on springs 11 on rods 10 fixed to a bar 2 secured to the conveyer frame 4. Friction pads 8 are secured to the bar 6 and other friction pads 14 are secured to the bar 2, the opening between the friction pads being wedge-shaped so that if the belt 1 moves laterally from the central position shown it is braked by one or other pair of pads. The pads 14 are adjustable laterally on the bar 2 by means of slots 16, and the bar 2 is adjustable laterally of the conveyer on the frame 4. The brake pads may be disc shaped and may be carried entirely by the upper bar 2 or by a corresponding plate. In the construction shown in Fig. 8 the brake is provided by means of rollers 22, 23 which may themselves be braked or which may be driven through gearing 29, 26 at a slower rate than the belt or in the opposite direction. The braking devices may be brought into action by electrical relays when the belt is displaced laterally.
