553,004. Regenerating exhaled air. HERZMARK, N. Dec. 3, 1941, No. 15567. [Class 137] [Also in Group VI] Air for regeneration is subjected to oxygenating and carbon dioxide neutralizing agents consisting of a mixture of one or more peroxides or persalts of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, and an insoluble manganate of an alkaline earth metal which is transformable by carbon-dioxide into a soluble permanganate which will yield oxygen simultaneously with the absorption of carbon dioxide. Suitable substances are insoluble alkaline earth manganates such as barium manganate which are converted by weak acids such as carbon dioxide into soluble permanganates which react with the alkali or alkaline earth peroxides or per-salts to produce free oxygen. The carbon dioxide is fixed by decomposition of the manganates, and by combination with the alkali-or alkaline-earth hydroxides to form carbonates, and a further quantity may be absorbed by alkalineearth metal ferrates. Porous or fibrous materials such as asbestos may be added to the reacting substances. In an example, sodium perborate 80 parts is mixed with barium manganate 10 parts and asbestos 10 parts, and this mixture is preferably added to a mixture of barium oxide 25 parts barium ferrate 5 parts, sodium peroxide 50 parts, barium manganate 10 parts and asbestos 10 parts. These are mixed dry compressed between wire gauzes and suspended in contact with the air to be treated.
