Abstract

552,083. Hydroxyacetic acid esters. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). Sept. 19, 1941, No. 12030. [Class 2 (iii)] In the preparation of esters of hydroxyacetic acid with monohydric alcohols, the acid is dehydrated until it gives a calculated acidity of 104-113 per cent. before it is used for the esterification. Examples of the latter are : methanol, ethanol, n and iso-propane, n- and isobutanol, octanol, alcohols derived from olefines and those obtained by the hydrogenation of oxides of carbon, oleyl alcohol and allylalcohol. In. examples, methyl and isobutyl hydroxyacetates are prepared. According to the Provisional Specification, benzyl alcohol, glycol and glycerine may be used in the esterification. Specification 8103/40, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, is referred to.
