Abstract

551,841. Electroplating metal strip. TRIGGS, W. W. (Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation). Feb. 27, 1942, No. 2624. [Class 41] In a continuous process for the electroplating of metal strip a series of substantially vertically disposed anodes adapted to be moved from side-to-side of the bath across and parallel with the moving strip is provided, fresh anodes being moved from inoperative to operative plating position and worn anodes being removed therefrom to inoperative position at the other side of the bath. The anodes 3, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, which are arranged in two opposed sets operating on the faces S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> of the strips S, are suspended by the hooked ends 22 from bridges 4 of which the central plates 15 only are in electrical contact with the conductor plates 9 ; they are separated by spacers 24. Fresh anodes suspended from one set of insulated end plates 14 at the entry end A of a bridge are adapted to be moved inwardly into operative position by being engaged by the ends 20 of racks 16; worn anodes displaced from operative position are engaged by the hooked ends 21 of similar racks 16 and moved to inoperative position on plates 14 at the end B. To compensate for the reduction in thickness of the anodes as they wear, the bridges 4 are arranged inclined to the plane of the strip, and to prevent a decrease in current density towards the lower ends of the anodes, tapered wooden cross-pieces 23 are provided which cause the anodes to become slightly inclined and bring the lower ends nearer to the strip S.
