Abstract

<PICT:1021087/C6-C7/1> Refined copper bars are produced using an anode of impure copper by electrodeposition on the conductive portions of both surfaces of a cathode 1 consisting of a flat plate 4 on which are disposed electrically insulating portions 7 defining a spiral or other sinuous conducting track 8, the deposited copper being stripped from the cathode to yield a bar which is subsequently joined to others to form a continuous length. The electrically insulating portions 7 may be formed by upstanding fins of insulating material form by a strip inserted into a spiral groove in a stainless steel plate 4 or a similar strip disposed flush with the surface of the plate, or an insulating lacquer may be applied to define a spiral track 8 either on a flat plate or by coating the tops and sides of a plate having integral upstanding fins. The centre of the spiral and the regions of the cathode outside the track area are preferably coated with insulating material. The track 8 may be treated to facilitate removal of the deposit. Several cathodes 1 may be suspended in the electrolysis bath with anodes adjacent each face. Even if the cathode deposits extend over the insulating portions, a line of weakness is formed which allows parting of adjacent turns.
