Abstract
551,636. Cleaning metal surfaces. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Aug. 29, 1941, No. 11040. Convention date, Aug. 31,1940. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Carbonaceous material is removed from the carbonized surfaces of alloy steel articles such as tubes, reactors, and other articles by first treating with wet steam, then with an aqueous solution of a strongly oxidizing inorganic acid, e.g. nitric or chromic acids, and a hydrohalide acid, e.g., hydrofluoric acid, and then with a more concentrated solution of the strongly oxidizing acid. The first acid treatment may be effected with a solution. containing 6-12 per cent. of nitric acid and ¢-3 per cent. of hydrofluoric acid for about 2-6 hours and the second treatment with nitric acid 10-20 per cent, concentration for about 1-2 hours, both treatments being carried out at 70-90‹C. and the surfaces washed with water after each treatment. The initial treatment is effected with steam containing 5-20 per cent. of. moisture for 6-24 hours.
