Abstract

550,303. Actuation of switches. NEILSON, D. H., MATHIESON, R., and DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Dec. 22, 1941, No. 16499. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XVIII] Liquid level is controlled by a "float" device depending upon the relative losses of weight due to immersion in liquid of two bodies made from materials of different specific gravity and the relative gains in weight when unsubmerged. A float chamber a is connected at b and c with the top and bottom of a reservoir the supply to which is to be controlled. A lever d pivoted at f carries two weights g, h of different sizes and specific gravities. One weight h carries a soft iron j in a non-magnetic tube k surrounded by a coil m adapted to produce a magnetic circuit through a pole piece p, variable air gap r, and pivoted armature s. When the chamber a is empty the weight h falls, the magnetic flux is at a minimum, and the armature s opens the contacts t whereby a valve or pump is controlled to supply liquid to the reservoir. When the chamber a is filled, the loss of weight of the body h is greater than that of g (they may be of aluminium and lead respectively), the body h rises and the switch closes to stop the supply of liquid. Alternatively, the lever d may act directly on a switch, change an inductance or magnetic field, actuate electro-optical means, or move a permanent magnet controlling the contacts.
