Abstract

[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A test-bar device for fixing in alignment with a spindle such as a lathe spindle for resetting purposes comprises a round bar 1 with a hemispherical head 2 fitting in a socket in a loose mounting member 4 secured against the spindle end 5 by a clamping rod 6 screwed into the head 2 and passing through a clearance hole 7 in the mounting member and through the centre of the hollow spindle. Before fully tightening the securing nut 20 the mounting 4 is adjusted by tapping so that the centre of movement 8 of the head 2 lies on the lathe axis and the bar 1 is also adjusted in its socket so that its axis is in alignment with the spindle axis. The clamping nut is then fully tightened. A washer 9 may be interposed between the part 4 and the spindle nose. The rod 6 may be built up to the required length by connecting short lengths together by screwed sleeves. In a modification, Fig. 5, the test bar 10 has a ball-head 11 secured in a socket in the mounting member by a screwed cap 13 and the rod 6 is screwed into the mounting member 12. When the rest bar has been thus aligned it serves as a datum for adjustment of the headstock or other parts.
