Abstract
549,326. Titanium dioxide. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO., Ltd. May 8, 1941, No. 6001. Convention date, June 18, 1940. [Class 1 (iii)] A nucleating composition for use in the hydrolysis of titanium salt solutions is obtained by heating a titanium tetrachloride solution having a titanium content of 5-30 grams TiO 2 per litre, to which has been added a soluble non-oxidizing salt of a monobasic acid in sufficient amount to give 0.5-2.0 mols. monovalent anion equivalents per mol. of TiCl 4 . Suitable salts are borax, sodium acetate, and sodium, calcium, and aluminium chlorides. The heat treatment should be to 80-90‹C. for 10-15 minutes, or such other conditions as will produce the same degree of opalescence. In use, the nucleating composition is mixed with a titanium salt solution containing 10-200 grams TiO 2 per litre so as to constitute 1-10 per cent., preferably 4-5.5 per cent. of the mixture, and the mixture is heated to boiling point.
