Abstract

549,213. Surgical dressings; tampons. JOHNSON & JOHNSON (GT. BRITAIN), Ltd., May 7, 1941. No. 5964. Convention date, May 7, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 81 (ii)] An absorbent material for surgical dressings and tampons consists of a mass of disintegrated cellulosic fibrous material having a swellable agent, e.g. a water soluble gum, intimately incorporated therein whereby the material will expand on absorbing a liquid. The gum is distributed throughout the cellulosic fibres in a finely divided state and a wetting agent may be intimately distributed throughout the fibres to accelerate the absorption of the material. The material may be cased in a porous covering, e.g. that described in Specification 468,529, [Group VIII].
