Abstract
548,698. Wall plugs. MURRAY, G., and MURRAY [nee EATON], K. M. March 18, 1941, Nos. 3684 and 11414. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Wall plugs are made from soft and springy compacted metal fibres such as wool or swarf. The fibres may be loaded into a die around a mandrel 11 by means of a hopper extension 10 of the die and compacted between plungers 12, 14; the latter may act as an ejector. In a modification each plunger has a short pointed mandrel. The holes through the plugs may be completed by drilling or the plug may be divided transversely and held. In other modifications the plugs are formed solid and the holes are drilled, the plugs are pressed in sections 25 between plungers 23, 2.7 the sections being connected if desired by adhesives such as rubber or shellac solution. In further modifications the plugs are compacted between lateral plungers 34, 35 adjustable end plungers being also provided; any plunger may act as ejector. The end plungers may slide on a common mandrel. The plugs may be formed in part by rolling or extruding, or the metal may be partly fused together by a welding current. The exterior of the plug may have a thin coating of solder. The fibres may be of heat or corrosion resisting metals or they may be coated for these purposes. Holes may be drilled in articles made of synthetic resin to receive plugs as above to receive fixing screws. A range of sizes is made with a common external diameter but varying diameters of bore so that three or four drills will suffice to prepare holes for the complete range.
