Abstract
548,168. Liquid-pressure engines. DELAWARE ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1942, No. 667. Convention date, Oct. 11, 1941. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XII] An electric or other furnace 10 is tilted about pivots 14 by a pair of hydraulic jacks consisting of a piston P pivoted to bearing blocks 19 on the foundation 16 and a cylinder C having a universal joint connection with the furnace shell. The universal joint connection consists of a collar 23 having pins 24, 25 journalled in brackets 26, 27 on the cylinder at right-angles to pins 22, 21 journalled in the furnace shell and a bracket 18 secured to the furnace shell respectively. The head 35 of the cylinder C is formed with a central depressed portion 37 to receive the head 46 of a rod 47 extending downwards through the head 54 of the piston P and carrying an adjusting nut 48. A cap 40 formed with a normally closed screw vent 42 and having dowel pins 45 engaging the head 46 is bolted to the cylinder head 35. The nut 48 is formed with slots 53 engaging keys 57 on the inner wall of the piston so that the extension of the piston may be adjusted by rotating the rod 47 by means of the cap 40. Fluid is supplied to or withdrawn from the cylinders through passages 29 in the piston end trunnions 28, the piston head 54 being formed diametrically opposite slots 56. The escape of fluid is prevented by a bushing 49 between the piston and cylinder and packed gland 50. Air above the fluid is allowed to escape through a bleed hole 39 in the head 35 and the vent 42.
