Abstract
547,974. Pneumatic springs. STANHAY, Ltd., and GOLDUP, C. E. March 29, 1940, No. 5717. (Class 108 (iii)] In pneumatic means for lifting or displacing bodies such as agricultural implements or the landing flaps, air-brake flaps, undercarriage or other parts of aircraft, a ram or piston is movable under pressure against a pneumatic force which increases with the displacement until a floating position is reached. Thus the tines of a cultivating implement may be made to follow the contour of the ground. The piston a is formed of two diameters and the supply of pressure fluid through ports f, g alternately to the two ends of the cylinder b is effected by a rotatable valve c. When pressure fluid is supplied to the upper face of the piston, the lower face is connected through a port c<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, to a receiver provided with a relief valve, instead of to the atmosphere as in Specification 491,130, [Group XXX]. The spring load on the relief valve may be adjusted by a lever carrying a pawl adapted to engage teeth on a quadrant. The piston a may be provided with the fluidtight packing described in Specification 543,120, [Group XXVI].
