Abstract

[Class 45] [Also in Group XXXIII] A ship's deck or like stanchion consists of two or more telescopic lengths of tubing A which are connected together by short lengths of tubing B secured diametricalty through their overlapping ends A<SP>1</SP> to act both as securing bolts or rivets and as guides for horizontal rails or cables. The upper end A<SP>2</SP> of each length of tubing A is tapered as at G, and the jointing is affected as by brazing. The stanchion may be rigidly secured to a base E, or its lower end may be flattened and forked to engage pivotally a pin C fixed between two cheeks D on the base. A second pin F, chained to the base and provided with a pivoted drop - piece, passes through aligned holes in the cheeks D and a hole in the lower end of the stanchion. This lower end is strengthened by a piece of heavy gauze brazed inside it.
