546,758. Moulding and vulcanizing apparatus. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., WILLSHAW, H., and SMITH, H. Feb. 26, 1941, No. 2590. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] In a moulding and vulcanizing apparatus, one or more moulds 24 containing, for example, a tyre to be vulcanized are enclosed in a chamber formed by a base 1 and a lid 5 which are completely separable but are locked together in use. The lid 5 which is moved by a hoisting gear 25 carries a depending flange 6 and is secured to the base by a bayonet joint 4, 8, rotation being effected by a pawl 11 operated by a lever 12 and engaging a rack 10. The lid rests on a ball race 9 and a tight joint is obtained by a packing 18. The lid is locked in its closed position by a lever 43 which falls between the parts of the bayonet joint. The base 1 contains a flexible diaphragm which may be an annular chamber 16 distensible by fluid pressure to give a nipping pressure to the mould. Distance pieces 39 may rest on or be formed with a plate 20 resting on the diaphragm. A controlling device may operate the pressure services in succession so that after a mould containing a tyre to be vulcanized has been inserted and the fittings 28, 29 for inflation of the tyre are connected, the lid is closed and locked, pressure water is admitted to the diaphragm 16, steam is passed into the tyre for inflation, steam is admitted to the chamber to apply vulcanizing temperature and is afterwards replaced by air under pressure, and air under pressure is passed into the tyre to replace the steam. The various services are allowed to exhaust and cooling water is passed through the chamber.
