Abstract

758,816. Retreading tyres. VACU-LUG TRACTION TYRES, Ltd., and WELLINGS, J. HORTON-. June 15, 1954 [April 21, 1953], No. 10876/53. Class 87(2) A mould having separate tread and side wall sections 10, 11, respectively, the heating or cooling of which can be controlled independently, is provided with members 23, 24 which allow the sections 10, 11 to separate and thus form an insulating space without allowing rubber to escape. Vent holes 27 are provided for the escape of gases. Spacing members 12, 13 are provided between the upper and lower sections 10, 11. The members 10 and 12 are aligned by spigots 16 and rebates 17, and secured by screws 19. The members are secured to press platens by lugs 18, 25, 25a, with the interposition of insulating material (see Fig. 4, not shown). The upper and lower platens are moved by a screw mechanism and fluid operated piston respectively. After moulding and curing of the tyre, the lower platen is lowered, the tyre remaining in the lower section owing to its greater depth, and during this movement plungers on which the section 11 is mounted engage an abutment to provide relative movement between the lower sections 10, 11 and thus strip the tyre from the mould. The mould parts may be made of an aluminium alloy.
