Abstract
546,492. Compound sheet materials. COOK, M., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 15, 1941, No. 551. [Class 140] A composite material for fuel containers comprises vulcanized fibre in which is incorporated one or more layers of metallic reinforcement, e.g. steel, copper, zinc, brass or bronze in the form of perforated sheet, woven metallic fibre or wire mesh. The metallic reinforcement may be assembled with sheets of unsized paper and the assembly treated with zinc chloride, washed, dried, and if desired, calendered. Alternatively, the metallic reinforcement and pre-formed vulcanized fibre may be adhered under pressure by casein or silicate adhesives. Keying layers of paper or fabric may be adhered to the metal before application of the vulcanized fibre layers, the surface of which may be roughened. The product may be rendered flexible by impregnation with glycerine or oil or an aqueous emulsion of partly saponified softening agents. It may be coated with neoprene or a nitro-cellulose or oil lacquer. The fuel container may be provided with a self-sealing covering. Specification 546,362, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
