Abstract

546,413. Billet-piercing. WELSFORD, H. G., and MUIR, W. P. Jan. 2, 1941, No. 93. [Class 83 (iv)] In forging artillery shells and other hollow articles a billet B is placed in a die A, having a relatively movable bottom member 30, a punch 7 is advanced to pierce the billet and expand it into contact with the die walls, and the member 30 is positively and progressively retracted from the die by relative movement. The die cavity may be formed in a block 24 vertically movable on rods 19 fixed fo a base 6 which carries the member 30 and hollow plungers 35 engaging cylindrical bores 34 in the block. When the punch engages the billet the punch holder 11 engages and forces down, against the action of springs 21, a plate 13 and plungers 15, which compress liquid contained in the cylinders 34 causing the block 24 to rise. The cylinders can be charged from a tank 39 and a safety valve 43 is provided.
