Abstract
545,973. Ignition systems. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and LAIRD, J. A. Dec. 19, 1940, No. 17903. [Class 7 (iv)] In a system in which a condenser b is charged from a D.C. generator or other source a and discharged through a smaller condenser d in series with the primary winding e of an ignition transformer, a contact device h connects the members d, e alternatively in parallel with the condenser b and with a by-pass circuit i for charging and discharging the condenser d. The movable member g of the contact device is actuated by means co-ordinated with the engine cycle. In a modification, the device h is replaced by a pair of separable contacts and a rotary commutator, the fixed contacts of which are connected respectively to one side of the condenser b and to the bypass circuit i. Instead of a D.C. generator, an A.C. generator may be used with a thermionic or other rectifier.
