545,882. Rubber threads and other articles. SHEPHERD, T. L. Feb. 10, 1941, No. 1792. Drawings to Specification. [Class 70] Rubber, particularly in the form of thread, of low extensibility is formed by stretching the rubber, prior to vulcanization, beyond its elastic limit and subsequently vulcanizing it at a temperature below the annealing temperature and while not under tension. The rubber may be compounded with vulcanizing ingredients or may suspended in a solution or dispersion of these ingredients such that vulcanizing takes place during storage at between ordinary temperature and 50‹C. The vulcanized rubber recovers its extensibility to a small extent on subsequent heating, which may be effected after the thread has been woven into cloth. A latex mix containing ultra-accelerators such as sodium isopropyl xanthate, diethyl ammonium diethyl dithiocarbamate &c. together with zinc oxide, antioxidants, stabilizers &c. is extruded in the form of thread into a coagulating bath. The thread is stretched, dried at a temperature below 65‹C. and wound either directly on to collapsable swifts or first on to bobbins, drums &c. and then on to collapsable swifts. The hanks are removed from the swifts and allowed to hang free from tension until vulcanized. Specifications 423,997 and 520,092, [Group XXVIII], are referred to.
