Abstract

A method of making an elastic fabric includes incorporating in the fabric elastic threads in parallel relationship with textile threads which each comprise at least one thread of inextensible textile material wrapped around a chemically removable core, and treating the fabric to remove the cores of the textile threads. The elastic threads may be incorporated in an unstretched condition by associating them with inextensible threads of a material removable or destructable as by chemical means. Alternatively the elastic threads may be incorporated in a predetermined condition of stretch, for example by being stretched and having applied whilst in the stretched condition a helical wrapping of textile thread to maintain the stretched condition, and a further wrapping of a chemically removable inextensible thread to inhibit further stretch. Desirably the inextensible threads associated with the elastic threads and the core material of the non-elastic threads are removable by the same means, for example, they may both comprise alginate threads and be removed by the same solvent. Specifications 291,998, [Class 120 (iii)], 517,978 and 678,507, [both in Group IX], are referred to.
