Abstract

545,508. Target boards. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and VAUGHAN, G. Nov. 27, 1940, No. 16980. [Class 132 (iii)] In the manufacture of target boards for games or sports such as darts, archery and other target games the said boards are built up from a plurality of bricks or blocks of treated straws, to which end the straws, assembled or arranged in mutually parallel relationship or substantially so and cut to suitable length, are compressed into slab form and subsequently heated, this treatment being regulated so as to compact the straws for handing in subsequent operations while retaining the straw characteristics unimpaired in the slab from which the above-mentioned bricks or blocks are produced. The straws, after being initially cut to length, are assembled between a pair of plates and, if desired, subjected to a steaming treatment, after which the whole is put into a jig, (Fig. 1, not shown), compressed and heated, producing a slab without impairing the straw characteristics. The slab 1 then has a wrapping of brown paper 4 or other material glued to the surface other than the straw ends, and is then sliced at 5 into bricks. The cut ends are glued together under pressure and then the slab is cut intermediate of the glued joints at 8. The resulting bricks are glued together edge-to-edge and cut again into pieces suitable for assembling into a dart-board which comprises two layers of treated straw end-on to the surface and joined by a central layer of glue.
