Abstract

593,269. Targets. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and VAUGHAN, G. May 29, 1945, No. 13389. [Class 132 (iii)] Target boards comprising a compressed assembly of short lengths of straw so disposed that the ends of the straw constitute the playing surface of the target are manufactured by bonding the straw with a molten waxy material.' In an example 5-6 lbs of straw is arranged with the reeds of straw parallel to each other, clamped together and treated in molten paraffin wax at 90‹C. After draining and while the wax is still hot the bundle is compressed in two directions normal to the direction of the straw to about 1/15th of its original volume. After cooling and solidifying the block is trimmed and cut into sections of a target, the straws in each section lying end on to the playing surface. The sections are united by insertion of thin metal strips between them and passage of a low tension current through the strips to melt the adjacent wax, and then, after removal of the strips, pressing the sections together. Boards so made may be treated by the process described in Specification 593,268. Boards so manufactured are double-sided. Specification 407,336 also is referred to.
