[Class 106 (ii)] The gripping means in the rotating and/or non-rotating heads of a machine for testing wire under torsion are so arranged that the grip is increased with the torque. The dies A, B have their serrated faces C 1 , C 2 in contact with the specimen P. A bracket F is hinged on a pin M carried by the head N. Knife edges D 1 , D 2 , on the dies A, B engage the bracket F and block E rigid with the head N. In use, the specimen P is placed on the setting gauge G between the dies and the screw H turned until the dies grip the specimen. The springs S, S 2 keep the knife edge against their abutment when placing the specimen in position. The handles R 1 , R 2 may be gripped and the spring Q compressed and afterwards released to give the initial grip to the specimen. Torque now applied in the direction of the arrow will cause the specimen to be increasingly gripped as the torque is increased.
