Abstract
545,428. Leather fibres agglutinated by rubber ; plastic compositions; felt, wallpaper &c. CASSATT, E. B. Nov. 22, 1940, No. 16794. [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Floor coverings, underfelts, wall or ceiling papers, book-binding skins &c. are made by disintegrating waste fibrous material, e.g. green or tanned leather &c. in one or more stages by rotary beaters operating in a current of air sufficient to prevent overheating, e.g. with a high-speed loose-vaned rotor as disclosed in Specification 532,310, withdrawing the waste through a sieve, attentuating it in a gas current to an open graded condition, mixing a desired gradation with rubber dough containing a solvent and which may also contain a little water, sulphur, zinc oxide and magnesia, felting to sheet form and evaporating the solvent. The material is fed through plain or patterned metal rolls at ordinary temperature or heated up to 100‹ C., at 30 to 50 feet per minute, and reduced to the desired gauge by repeated reversals and reduction of the roll gap. Linen cloth may be interposed between the rolls and the material to prevent it adhering to the rolls. Specification 532,105 also is referred to.
