Abstract

544,811. Girdles. HERBENER, H. M. Aug. 10, 1940, No. 12836. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1939. [Class 141] A girdle or like garment comprises side portions which extend below the bottom edge of the front portion and are provided with at least one stiffening rib adjacent the bottom edge whereby the side portions are pulled inwards by a force applied to the ribs below their upper ends. As shown, side panels 10, 11, of two way stretch material extend below both the front and rear panels 12, 14 having vertical stretch only and the bottom edge 25 of the front panel is arched upwards and attached to ribbed strips 21 of the kind described in Specification 517,144; the top of the garment may be fitted with a similar strip 16. The front and rear panels are secured to the bottom strips at points midway of the length of the ribs. The lower strips may be provided with extensions 24 which may be tapered and can be joined by strips 31 to encircle the legs. In other forms, the garment is made of a single, two way stretch piece fitted with similar upper and lower strips, or of front and rear vertical stretch panels with side pieces of two-way stretch material each fitted with a single stiffening rib.
