[Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] Continuous filaments are converted into staple fibre yarns or like products by passing them through two sets of drafting rollers, the second set being driven at a speed at least 5 times as great as the first, the speed of the second set being also varied at intervals so as to produce a variation in the draft and give a yarn or the like having variations in thickness. The filaments may have a basis of cellulose acetate or other organic derivative of cellulose, may be stretched and saponified and may be shrunk after stretching; filaments of stretched regenerated cellulose or stretched polyamide filaments may be used. The filaments may be pigmented and may be drafted in a wet condition and soaps or other salts of compounds having a long aliphatic chain, soaps of higher fatty acids, sulphonated oils and salts of sulphates of higher fatty acids may be added to the wetting liquid. As shown a bundle 1 of continuous filaments is led from a braked bobbin 2, through a tension device 4 to a set of feed rollers 5 comprising an upper spring-loaded smooth steel roller 6 resting on a pair of fine plated steel rollers 7; the second set of rollers comprise a spring-loaded upper roller 9, faced with leather, rubber or cork, resting on a steel roller 10. A conductor 11 leads the. material to the nip of the rollers 9, 10 and the roller 10 is driven at a varying speed by elliptical gears 13, 14 or other speed-varying device.
