Abstract
544,219. Obtaining fibres. ABBEY, A. (Naamlooze Vennootschap Fontania Centraal Import-en Exportkantoor). March 14, 1940, No. 4819. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 23, 1940.] [Class 2 (ii)] Fibres are obtained from vegetable fibrous material, e.g., bast fibres from flax &c. by heating the material with a solution containing hydrogen peroxide, urea and a buffer substance preferably a phosphate ; the woody matters are thus loosened and are removed by mechanical means. In an example, 100 kgs. of flax are immersed in 1,600 litres of a bath containing 0.5 per cent. hydrogen peroxide, 1 per cent. urea, 0.5 per cent. ammonium phosphate and, if desired, 0.5-1 per cent, of ammonium carbonate. The temperature of the bath is raised from 50 C. to 80-100 C. and the treatment continued for 1-1¢ hours after which the material is rinsed with hot water to which a little acid, e.g., hydrogen sulphide is added and the woody matters removed by mechanical treatment. The treatment may be carried out in vacuo or at atmospheric or greater pressure and the final material may be bleached by the action of light or by treatment with alcohols or ketones, e.g., acetone. The hydrogen peroxide may be formed electrolytically in the bath and a mixture. of ammonia and carbon dioxide may be used to form the urea and ammonium carbonate.
