Abstract
544,045. Elastic diaphragm pressure gauges. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., and MEREDITH, F. W. Aug. 20, 1940, No. 13250. [Class 106 (ii)] An initial stress is applied to the diaphragm by resilient means which has a stiffness of the same order as or less than the stiffness of the diaphragm. A resilient diaphragm 10 is clamped at the flange 11 of a plate 12 to form a chamber 13 to which pressure fluid is admitted through the pipe connection 14. The flange 11 is clamped to one flange 15 of a tubular distance piece 16 the other flange 17 of which has clamped to it by a ring 19 a second diaphragm 18. The diaphragms are connected at their centres by an adjustable coupling. This comprises a part 20 having a hollow spigot 21 screwed to receive a screw 23 with a head 30. The screw 23 is rotatable in a socket 24 formed with a flange 25 against which the diaphragm 18 is clamped by a nut 26. A socket extension 27 slides on the part 21 and is surrounded by a tubular rubber packing 28 between the flanges 25, 29. The diaphragm 18 exerts an initial stress on the diaphragm 10 which may be adjusted from outside by turning the head 30. A strut 33 pointed at the ends which engage jewelled bearings 32, 34 transmits motion of the diaphragm to a spring pulled pointer 31. The hollow distance piece is open at 36 but may be closed and connected to a second source of pressure.
