Abstract

543,950. Aerial bombs. FLOWER, J. W. Nov. 12, 1940, No. 16377. [Class 9 (i)] To enable a bomb to penetrate deeply into a target before exploding, its nose 13 is provided with inclined grooves 16 having cutting edges 17, Fig. 3, and the tail vanes 10 are helically inclined so as to impart rotation to the bomb as it falls. The grooves 16 may be extended by grooves 18 of increasing cross-section to the tail-end of the bomb, so as to provide clearance channels for the targetmaterial drilled out by the nose. The nose-tip 15 may be of blunter angle than the rest of the nose. The vanes 10, which may be made of fragile non-metallic material such as vulcanite, are of tapering cross-section so as to facilitate their fracture as the bomb penetrates the target, or they may be aligned with the grooves 18 and cemented therein, or be dowelled or clamped to the bomb body. If the body be tapered, the vanes may be mounted on the ends of strips which extend rearwardly along the grooves 18 from a nose-cap, and a spring is provided to throw off the vanes when the strips are fractured on impact.
