Abstract

543,856. Fluxes. DEWEY & ALMY CHEMICAL CO. Sept. 13, 1940, No. 14188. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1939. [Class 82 (ii)] A soldering, tinning or galvanizing flux comprises ammonium chloride, and a metal halide with the addition of 10-17.5 per cent. by weight of the total composition of the oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of zinc, calcium, magnesium tin antimony or lead so as to prevent caking of the mass on storage and on exposure to the atmosphere. The metal halide used is zinc chloride and this and the ammonium chloride may be used in the form of a double salt. Ammonium chloride may be replaced by the hydrohalide of an organic amine. In an example, the flux consists of 100 lbs of zinc ammonium chloride crystals and 15 lbs of zinc carbonate. To produce the flux; zinc oxide or carbonate and a commercial double salt of zinc and ammonium chloride which is rich in absorbed mother liquor are mixed, the mixture being subjected to continuous agitation for a period of time sufficient to allow completion of the reaction between the mother liquor and the oxides. Instead of agitating the mixture, the latter may be allowed to set in a solid cake which is then comminuted.
