Abstract
543,374. Furnace doors. METCALFE, H. Aug. 27, 1940, No. 13503. [Class 51 (i)] In a furnace door of the kind provided with tortuous air-heating passages communicating with the atmosphere and with the furnace, a metal box 1 secured to the door 6 is provided with a vertical partition 8 dividing it into compartments 13, 14, the compartment 13 being open to the atmosphere through apertures 7 in the door 6 and communicating with the compartment 14 through apertures 17, 18 in the bottom 16 thereof. The compartment 14 is provided with horizontal baffles 19, 20 so that the air takes a tortuous course before escaping to the furnace through apertures 12. The partition 8 may be provided with ribs 15, studs or other projections. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the air enters the outer compartment through apertures 31 in the door and passes downwardly to apertures 26, 27 at the bottom of the inner compartment and thence through a tortuous passage formed by baffles 23 to outlet apertures 25. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which the door is provided with vertical slots 32 the lower parts of which are covered by a plate 34 having an aperture 37 communicating with the outer compartment 38 of the box which is of the same form as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
