Abstract

543,079. Exhausting and filling electric lamps and discharge devices. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 11, 1940, No. 16350. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1939. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XL] An electric discharge lamp 17 is inserted between spring grips, and its exhaust tube is pushed into an exhaust port 23, with a gas-tight fit; the exhaust port is mounted on a bracket 33 extending from a rotary turret and carrying a mercury dispenser 92 such as described in Specification 531,811, [Group XVIII], which dispenser delivers a measured drop of mercury to the device at requisite times. The bracket and device are carried by the rotation through a series of stations in which successively, after the insertion of the lamp (1) an upper valve section 40 connected to the turret aligns a passage 47 in this section with an exhaust passage 46 in the stationary lower section : (2) the lamp still under suction is carried through an arcuate oven, and if desired a leak detector comes into action and may close a pinch clamp, flattening a rubber connection 52 in the bracket, or may give an alarm, or close the connection between the exhaust port 23 and its exhaust where this serves a number of lamps; (3) the lamp leads make electrical connection, to heat and decompose barium carbonate in the lamp, rendering it emissive ; (4) the current is broken and the dispenser caused to discharge a drop of mercury, under the action of the cam controlling the pinch clamp ; (5) the cathodes are heated to full operating temperature, and, later,'full potential is applied to them ; (6) the upper end of the lamp is carried into an oven and pre-heated, after breaking the current ; (7) the exhaust is increased and then cut off, a second drop of mercury added, and a dose of gas supplied ; (8) the exhaust tube is sealed by a gas jet; and (9) finally the lamp and exhaust tube stub are removed.
