Abstract
542,709. Spring struts or legs. COWEY, L. E. July 22, 1940, No. 12021. Addition to 534,984 [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In a modification of the shock-absorber strut or oleo leg of the parent Specification the valve through which the oil and air is introduced into the strut is arranged within the lower end of the tubular piston rod jointed to the piston and a tube extends therefrom longitudinally through the piston rod and through the piston and the valved dividing plate in the cylinders into the compression space. The movable piston is in two parts 3, 4 connected by a sleeve 5 and a tubular connecting rod 6 pivoted to the lower part 4 is pivotally connected by a link 7 to the leg 10 which is pivoted to a bracket 11 fixed on the cylinder 2 and carries a castor wheel at its free end. The cylinder is mounted in a casing 1 by which the leg is secured, for example to an aircraft, and the cylinder cover 16 has a cross pin 26 carrying rolls engaging cam recesses in a member 28 whereby the castor wheel is centralised after castoring action. The central position can be adjusted, after fitting the leg, by loosening screws 29 connecting a head 31 to the members 28 and turning the member as required. Oil and air are introduced from the side or bottom of the connecting rod 6 to a valved casing 21 connected to a tube 22 extending through the two part piston and having an extension tube 23 passing through a division plate 14 secured in the cylinder by a sleeve 15 and housing a valve 17 which is fixed by the tube 23 and assists the return of fluid from the upper to the lower part of the cylinder after compression of the strut. The position of the upper end. of the tube is arranged to be just below the working level of the rib.
