Abstract
534,984. Aircraft alighting gear; vibration dampers. COWEY, L. E. Sept. 22, 1939, No. 26472. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXXII] A shock-absorber strut or oleo leg for aircraft comprises a cylinder 5 to which is attached a bracket 33 carrying a pivot for a wheel fork 30 which is connected by a piston rod 12 to a piston 7 movable in the cylinder 5. The cylinder is divided by a stationary piston-like member 21 having apertures 29, Fig. 5, between its upper and lower surfaces, and a spring-pressed valve 25 normally closing the passage between apertures 26, 28. For small movements of the piston, fluid passes from one side to the other through the apertures 29, but for larger movements, the valve 25 is lifted, and the fluid, passes through the apertures 26, 28. Compressed air and oil are passed into the cylinder through a valve closure member 48 in a passage leading to a dipping tube 50. The cylinder 5 is rotatably mounted in a casing 1 and its closure member 22 carries rollers urged towards cam surfaces by a coil spring 46 and tending to hold the wheel fork in a central position when the aircraft is in flight. During taxiing, the force between the rollers and the cam surfaces due to the weight of the aircraft tends to return the wheel to its central position.
