Abstract
542,493. Ammonium sulphate. APPLEBYFRODINGHAM STEEL CO., Ltd., and STEPHENSON, H. P. July 8, 1940, No. 11384. [Class 1 (ii)] In the production of sulphate of ammonia from coal gas, the gas is passed through a " semidirect saturator A containing dilute sulphuric acid and the liquor containing excess sulphuric acid is passed to a second and " indirect saturator " B in which it is treated with ammonia obtained from ammoniacal liquor and from which the solid ammonium sulphate is removed. The coal gas enters and leaves the saturator A by pipes 1 and 2, and the mother liquor overflows through pipe 3 into a tank 4 from which it is fed by a pump 5 to the saturator B into which ammonia is fed by a pipe 9. The mother liquor overflows through pipe 10 into a tank 11, and is fed by a pump 12 back to the saturator A where it is further acidified. No solid salt is formed in saturator A as all the acid, and most of the water is added to this saturator, but all the solid salt formed is removed from saturator B in crystals of the required size.
