Abstract

507,498. Guanidine nitrate. BURNS R., GAY, P. F., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1937, No. 34755. [Class 2 (iii)] Guanidine nitrate is prepared by the interaction of ammonium nitrate and a cyanamide salt in the presence of a proportion of water not less than 4 per cent, calculated on the weight of ammonium nitrate. Preferably, the proportion of ammonium nitrate to cyanamide salt is more than 3 : 1 mols., the proportion of water is 30-60 per cent (preferably 50 per cent) of the weight of ammonium nitrate, and the reaction temperature is 90-130‹ C. The reaction may be effected by adding sufficient water to the ammonium nitrate to liquefy it at the desired reaction temperature, heating the mixture to that temperature, and adding the cyanamide salt gradually with stirring, the vigour of the reaction being controlled both by the temperature and by the rate of addition of cyanamide salt. The product is extracted with water, and the extract may be freed from calcium by precipitation with ammonium sulphate and carbonate, and concentrated.
