Abstract
542,358. Bipolar electrolysers. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. April 2, 1940, No. 5921. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1940. [Class 41 ] In bi-polar electrolysers for the production of hydrogen and oxygen in which individual cells are formed by metal plates 10 held apart by diaphragm plates 1 and pressed together by bolts 6 and springs 7 and in which the anodes 3 and cathodes 4 project into the cells and are connected by bolts 12, the asbestos diaphragms 2 carried by the frames &c. are supported by having one or the other of the electrodes pressed against them. If pressed against the cathodes, intervening insulating members are inserted. The pressure between the electrodes and the diaphragms may be increased by increasing the pressure in the cells by throttling the gas outlets.
